The first chick of the second generation of the pre-Pyrenees colony is the fruit of the union of an french exogenous vulture and a vulture born in the catalonian colony.

News like this congratulated us because confirms one of the objectives of the project to achieve a connection between the French and iberian colonies and, on the other hand, confirms the healthy state of our colony.

Thanks to the monitoring undertaken by field technicians Gerad Plana (Trenca) and Émilie Delepoulle (Grefa) we could see that the couple formed by Coma, born in Boumort (Catalonia) in 2012, and Quasimodo, born in Grandes Causes (France) in the same year, frequented alternatively the different supply points in the area; a fact that made us think about the possibility that the couple was incubating somewhere in the National Hunting Reserve of Boumort.

Coma

Quasimodo

It was, at the beginning of week, and against all odds, when the field technician of Trenca, Gerard Plana,  localized the nest with the french vulture (Quasimodo) and the chick.

The birth of this chick is a great success in this project because it was only 8 years of the first releases in the National Hunting Reserve of Boumort. It is so interesting too because the male born in France as the female born in the pre-pyrenees catalan, are adults of 4th year, too young to reproduce.

In this way, in the year 2015 have been formed 12 couples, 10 of them began to incubate with the result of 5 chicks.  3 of these chicks have come forward, as well as in 2014, a fact that make us look ahead with optimism and enthusiasm!

The reintroduction project of the Black Vulture in the Pyrenees is promoted by the Departament d’Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca, Alimentació i Medi Natural de la Generalitat de Catalunya and by the Fundació Catalunya – La Pedrera. GREFA and Trenca are involved in the assisment and implementation of the Project, toghether with the staff of the Espai Natura Muntanya d’Alinyà and the rangers of the NHR of Boumort. The Estació Biològica del Pallars Jussà carries out several educational actions related to the project.

REE is markedly engaged in financing the transmitters that allow us to radio track the black vultures from the project.
