There have been published 2000 copies that are being distributed among primary schoolchildren of the regions of the area of influence of the project of reintroduction of the black vulture in Pyrenees.
Since the beginning of the project for the reintroduction of black vulture in Catalonia in the year 2007 we have been carried out different activities in outreach and environmental education. The knowledge of the species and its benefits in the balance of the Pyrenean ecosystem are fundamental for their conservation.
During these 9 years of life of the project, there have been numerous lectures in schools, visits ‘in situ’ to the project and communications to the media with the aim of raising awareness and to acquaint this unique species and the other large birds scavengers of the Catalan Pyrenees. This broadcast has been doing both global and local levels.
To continue with this dissemination of the project has been edited a tale about the black vulture and the other species of necrophagous birds of the Pyrenees. The main objective of the tale is to provide an overview of the project and of these species among the regions of the area of influence.
With a first publication of 2000 copies and with the help of a technician in environmental education is spreading, free of charge, this tale among the students of higher cycle of primary school from the localities and regions of the Alt Urgell, Pallars Jussa, Pallars Sobira and La Noguera.
We have chosen these regions as a starting point because they are living with with the four large birds scavengers existing in the whole of Europe: black vulture (Aegypius monachus), griffon vulture (Gyps fulgus), bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) and Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus). We believe that they are the persons who have closer those who have to know them to be able to estimate them and therefore preserve them. We also believe, that children are a very important communicative vector between them and their families and their social environment.
Until now more than 20 schools have already been visited and more than 1000 tales have been distributed.
The visit is completed by a small explanation of the project and an interaction with the students with a few workshops where you manipulate objects related to the 4 vultures and reflect the values and the basic functions of these formidable species in the natural balance of life.
The main objective is to spread enthusiasm and love for the vultures and by nature in general because we believe that we can only estimate what we know!
The edition of this tale has the support of Fundación Biodiversidad (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment) and Naturaleza Rural.
