On the 28 days of tracking carried out in last February at the National Hunting Reserve of Boumort, 20 different Black Vulture specimens were monitored, both perching or feeding, by means of direct observation.
From those 20 black vultures, 17 were released or born in the wild within the programme for the reintroduction of the Black Vulture in the Pyrenees. The other 3 were of exogenous origin: 1 juvenile Black Vulture with neither rings nor marks, probably Iberian, and 2 specimens –Nouanda and Oviedo– from Cévennes (France), where a reintroduction programme was also carried out in the nineties and where there is already a viable population of the species. Currently, there are two more ongoing reintroduction projects of the Black Vulture, specifically in Baronnies and Verdon (French Pre-Alps). From the 20 black vultures monitored in Boumort in February, Perla and Portell were the most observed (23 records) and the less observed vulture was Oviedo (1 record).
In this last month of February, the bond between Nouanda (female) and Oriol (male) was broken. Straight away, Oriol paired with Neus (female), who moved from Alinyà to Boumort. Regarding Nouanda, she was last seen on the 13 of February, and she might be back to her home area in Cévennes (with no confirmation, for the time being). Over the course of the month, 4 of the 5 formed pairs started incubation. Perla and Portell layed the egg on the 6th of February; Menta and Mario, on the 8th; Olga and Aleix, on the 23th; and Bruna and Corneli, on the 28th.
The reintroduction project of the Black Vulture in the Pyrenees is promoted by the Departament d’Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca, Alimentació i Medi Natural de la Generalitat de Catalunya and by the Fundació Catalunya – La Pedrera. GREFA and Trenca are involved in the assisment and implementation of the Project, toghether with the Alinyà Natural Site staff and the rangers of the NHR of Boumort.
